Snowflake Measuring

So, remember those creepy crawlers I posted about yesterday? Well they were a hit and my students were enthralled! Since they are nocturnal creatures, I am so happy that they were really active when I showed them to my students. They also had to name them right away... To make it fair, I had everyone write down a name and then I drew the names out of a bucket.

Our hermit crabs are officially named Jason and Jibbles. Oh man... these first graders crack me up!

---------------------------------------------------------

Besides taking care of my little hermit crabs, I have been a busy lady! I have transformed my Candy Corn Measuring unit {read more about it here} into a Snowflake Measuring unit! It is the exact same unit, just with a different theme. I didn't have a chance to use this unit in October, so I will definitely use it this month.

This Unit Includes:
- Snowflake Rulers
- Measurement Board Game
- Measure and Graph Activity
- Snowman Measurement Activity
- Measure the Classroom Activity

Happy Monday, Sweet Friends! XoXo

How Do Snowmen Solve Story Problems?

If you follow me on Facebook or on TpT, then you already know that I have finally finished my newest unit: How Do Snowmen Solve Story Problems?! I go back to school on the 2nd, so I am already starting to prepare some of my lessons for January and February.

This packet includes a snowman anchor chart with the steps needed to solve a story problem (Read, Show, Solve, & Check). How cute is this little snowman? (Although he's really not so little! When put together, he is about 22 inches tall - perfect for your math wall!)

My students will have fun playing different roles while solving story problems together!

I really love the snowman anchor chart, but I am even more excited to play this snowball game with my kiddos! Each snowball will have a story problem inside it. To start the game, each student will start with a snowball and they will get to throw it ONE time. Then they will grab a new snowball that is close to them and solve that story problem on their worksheet. After a few minutes, we will repeat and play again! (My students aren't allowed to throw snowballs at recess, so they will love this game!)

I am excited to teach my students more about story problems this January!

This packet includes:

- 22 inch Snowman Anchor Chart w/ Worksheet
- 16 Practice Pages (addition with 2 and 3 numbers, subtraction, and mixed addition/subtraction)
- Password Activity (to help them remember the steps to solve a story problem)
- Group Activity (students solve story problems together by each having a job)
- Snowball Fight Activity (students throw paper snowballs that have story problems in them - then students solve the story problems)

This unit is aligned to the Common Core (first grade math standards)!

Candy Corn Measuring

By now it is no secret that I love Halloween... so, I have created another unit for my cute little firsties!

I tried out one of the games on my adorable nephew this afternoon and he has played it 3 times since. He keeps asking me, "Linds, let's play that one game again!" Needless to say, I let him keep the game and I think he'll be at my back door tomorrow, asking me if I'll play with him.

I love this kid {and his cute fist pump}:

This little guy is a Kindergartner, so measuring was a new concept to him. He ate it up!

This mini unit will help your students practice measuring with a non-standard unit (Candy Corn) and they will have fun doing it! While doing these activities, Candy Corn eating is *highly* recommended!!

This Unit Includes:
- Candy Corn Rulers
- Measurement Board Game
- Measure and Graph Activity
- Monster Measurement Activity
- Measure the Classroom Activity

This unit will compliment my Oh, So Spooky unit perfectly!

And as always... the first person who comments, with their email address, will get this unit FREE!

My House All Year (Teaching Months)

Please Note: This post includes Amazon Affiliate links.

Hello, Friends! I hope you are all having a good week... thank goodness it is almost Friday! (This teacher needs a WEEKEND!!) Before I head to bed, I wanted to share a writing activity that I started with my students this week. It is a book called My House All Year  and I learned about it from my wonderful cooperating teacher while I was student teaching (Thanks Lynda!! Love ya!). In this book, my students will write a sentence about each month of the year and draw a picture to accompany the sentence. This book will provide my students with writing practice and math practice (time: months of the year and seasons). We will only do one page a day and I am really encouraging my students to do their best, because I am going to give these books to their parents at Parent-Teacher Conferences.

Here is a sample of the My House All Year Book:

(BTW: I have my students draw a tree on each page to show the change in seasons.)

Before I introduced the books to my students I read My House to them. This book has interesting pictures and my students LOVED it. Click the picture below to check it out:

Double-Digit Math Packet {Triple-Digit, Too!}

It's done! Hooray!!! I have finally posted the Double/Triple-Digit Math Packet! I am so excited to use this packet with my students, because end-of-level testing is coming up and let's face it... they can use all the practice they can get!!

Before I show you all the bells and whistles included this packet, I must tell you about this awesome poster I got from Abby @ The Inspired Apple {here}. We use this poem every single day and I love to hear my students whisper it to themselves while they are working. This poster isn't included in my packet, because I didn't make it up, but I would definitely recommend that you create one for your classroom--it will help a lot!

I also use these posters which I made awhile ago... Click {here} to download them for free.
{My students like to say "Start on the right if you want to be RIGHT!"}

My students went on a math hunt yesterday {this activity is included in my double-digit packet} and they loved it! They were doing the same old, boring, double-digit math... but they didn't notice, because they got to move around the room to find the different math problems. I love to get my students moving
and I love it even MORE when they enjoy math! {I try to tell them everyday that they are mathematicians!}

Today my students played bingo... but first they had to do the work! We played bingo with all the sums and differences, so they were really motivated to get the answers right!

This packet includes over 50 practices pages {with answers included... don't worry}. In my classroom
I use them for homework, assessments, morning work, and practice pages.

I have this whole packet printed out and ready to go!  I love having all the masters in ONE place.
I am a freak for being organized and I just can't help it... everything has to be in
a binder {please tell me you're the same way}!!

This 140 page unit contains: over 50 practice pages {addition and subtraction, with/without regrouping, and triple/double-digit}, timed-tests {0-9 addition and subtraction}, 3 activities {bingo, a math hunt, and board game}, and story problem worksheets.

Every activity, worksheet, and game included in this packet is in black & white. I like to keep things pratical because I don't always have access to a color printer and color ink is just so expensive.

What tricks do you use in your classroom to teach double/triple-digit math?

DIY student rulers {without spending a penny}

Have you ever noticed that most {if not all} furniture stores have paper rulers all over the place?
AND they want you to take them! Why else would they put them around every corner?

My co-worker/mentor snagged a set for the whole second grade and it didn't cost us a penny!
It also doesn't matter if our students use and abuse them because... well... they were free!

We laminated our rulers and hole-punched the ends for easy storage.

Annnnddd... since these rulers are flexible, they are really easy to use!

double/triple-digit math {coming soon & a giveaway} - CLOSED!

Happy SPRING BREAK! I am loving this week and it is making me excited for summer vacation. However, I still have 2 months of school before I can fully enjoy the sunshine, so it is time to kick it into HIGH GEAR!

Before the break, I noticed that my students are S-T-R-U-G-G-L-I-N-G with double/triple-digit math {with regrouping}. Oh my... it is hard for them! It's amazing how some of my little dears got it  just-like-that and how some of them are lacking the motivation to get the answers correct {there are a LOT of steps}. I have students who can do simple addition/subtraction and they know the steps that are necessary to regroup, but they don't want to take the time to do it. GRRR! Let's just say that I have created my latest packet for them in mind: Double-Digit Addition & Subtraction {Triple-Digit, Too!}. It will include practice pages for double/triple digit math, games to keep your students engaged, timed tests, and MORE!
I will do my best to have this unit up by Sunday Thursday... I just have so much to add...

until then, I'm going to give you a chance to win this Double/Triple-Digit Math Packet!!!

All you have to do is follow my blog and leave a comment... EASY PEASY! :)

I will announce the winner when I finish and post this unit.

Good Luck!

around my classroom

Hello, Sweet Friends! I hope you are having a good week. I'm here... just trying to survive until Friday and then I get to enjoy one whole week off for SPRING BREAK! My students are literally going crazy with spring fever and we ALL need a break. Thank goodness there is only one more day!

Anyways... moving on...

Remember when I first posted about my reading beads {btw: reading beads are a GREAT way to track home reading minutes}? Well, let's just say that my students are totally obsessed with them! They have to read 100 minutes to get a bead and I occasionally offer special beads for special challenges.  There will def. be a Spring Break challenge and if they meet my challenge, they will get a special gold bead. These beads have been so motivating and I love how they can physically see how many minutes they have read {it's also been easy to maintain, because they only bring their charts back once a month}. This is definitely something I'll be doing next year!! Look at how many beads they have earned so far {our March calendars are due tomorrow and they'll get to put a bunch more on}:

After seeing a bunch of noise level charts on Pinterest, I decided to make my own version. I also had an empty space to fill and I had to put something colorful there, pronto! On my noise level chart I have magnets on each level and I just move the arrow to where it needs to be. We only use the noise level chart during quiet working time. I usually leave it at a "quiet whisper" and if I ever move it to "no talking" then they know I mean business!

What does your classroom schedule look like? I wanted to post mine, just in case somebody out there can use it! I use this pocket chart {click here to check it out} that I purchased last year and I have made my own subjects. I have a huge stack of different subjects and I switch them out daily -- depending on what I need. I also don't put the times because I am too lazy and because they hold me to it... "Ummm... Mrs. Erickson, it is 11:00 and we should be moving onto Math..." Ya, you know what I mean!

We are also working on 3-D shapes {click here to check them out}. I love my blow-up shapes and so do my students! These bright colors fit right into our circus theme and I love how they hang from the ceiling {they come down easy, too}.  We've been using activities from Amy's Shapin' Up Unit and my students are having tons of fun!

What are you doing in your classroom?

Fraction Fun!

This packet is full of Fraction FUN! In this unit you will find... 3 anchor charts {fraction, numerator, & denominator}, labeling fractions activity with anchor chart and worksheet/assessment, fraction book for teacher, mini fraction book for student {with a cut and paste activity}, fraction bookmarks, fraction line chart with an activity/assessment, memory game, fraction sort, story  problems, task cards (for independent work), 5 practice worksheets/assessments, & 2 Numerator/Denominator Charts {vertical & horizontal}.

Here are some of the activities available:

I am really excited to give them their fraction bookmarks tomorrow!
They will think they are pretty neat! ;)

And since I love you so much, click here to download the Fraction Sort as a FREEBIE!
If you like it, then be sure to check out the whole packet

Here is the completed Fraction Fun unit:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BTW: This unit completes my math wall {located at the front of my classroom where all my students can see it}. If you want your math wall to look like this, you can purchase the fraction unit here, graph posters here and download the double-digit addition/subtraction posters for free here!

You can also download the "Math Wall" banner for free {click here}!
Just print onto brightly colored card stock, cut out and tape onto thin string.

How do you teach fractions to your students? Do you have a math wall?

double-digit math {without regrouping}

Now that my students have somewhat "mastered" the art of addition and subtraction {mentally}, we have moved onto double-digits {without regrouping}! Wahoo! My second graders think they are so big now.

When I explained how easy it was to do double-digit addition/subtraction, they got so excited.
I could tell that they understood what I was saying and that they were feeling really smart.

To go along with what I have already taught my students, I will be putting these anchor charts up in our classroom to help reinforce the correct way to do 2-digit math. I can't wait to show these to them tomorrow!
{A good reminder for your students: You should start on the RIGHT if you want to get it RIGHT!
Click here to get your own copy (I have also included posters that say 2-Digit)!

The darling Amy over at Step Into 2nd Grade With Mrs. Lemons has some really great printables here and here. I have been using her worksheets in my classroom this week and my students really like them!

I also found some great worksheets here and here.

How do you teach double-digit addition/subtraction?

DIY place value mats

As a new teacher, I love finding easy/effective things to use in my classroom. For this reason alone, I feel the need to share with you... DIY Place Value Mats! A wonderful teacher at my school shared them with me and I am so grateful for her. These are so easy and you will want to make them first thing tomorrow morning! ;)

These Place Value Mats are made with one large sheet of construction paper (12 x 18") with a middle section (12 x 6") glued on top, in the middle. Then all you have to do is place titles at the top of each section and laminate. I actually had a parent volunteer put these all together (gotta love those volunteers)!

I love how they are so BIG and easy for my students to use!

We have used these mats over and over and OVER again!
My students keep the blocks in their desks, so it isn't a lot of hassle to get them out.

Click the image below to download the titles for each section:

How do you teach place value to your students?

Do you notice anything different about my blog?? ;)

all about GRAPHS!

Wow-WOW! I have literally been up all night working on this unit! I need sleep!
You know that feeling when creativity strikes and YOU. CAN'T. STOP. until it's done??
Ahhh! My bed is literally CALLING my name!
(For reals... my husband just woke up and he is wondering where I am...)

Anyways, my class has been working on graphs for the last few weeks.
I wanted to create something that organized all the different types... and this is what I came up with:

This Unit Includes: 6 Anchor Charts, 1 Small Booklet and Assessment, 1 Center Activity and Assessment.

I can't wait to get these printed, laminated, and up on my white board tomorrow!

Andddd, as a HUGE thank you to all my readers, this unit is only $4.00!

The first person to comment and leave me their email address will get this unit FREE! Yipee!
