CVCe Packet {SUPER E!}

I think this might be my favorite unit so far... {do I say that every time?} I am so excited to show you my latest unit... CVCe Activities: SUPER E!! I created this unit after I realized a few of my students didn't quite have this skill down. I have created a super hero named Ethan, but his friends call him SUPER E. He goes around helping other vowels say their name when they are in the CVCe word pattern.


This Unit Includes: CVCe posters {color, b&w, and draw-your-own}, a CVCe lesson suggestion with an accompanying worksheet, an original CVCe story with SUPER E as the main character {in color and b&w} with an accompanying worksheet, a SUPER E craftivity that your students will love {part of this craft is pictured above}, CVCe game {easy prep. work}, and 2 practices pages.

consonant digraphs

Hello friends! I have another unit for you… all thanks to HIGH WINDS! Yep. High winds. School on Thursday and Friday were cancelled due to high winds (100mph) and I am not complaining one bit. 
My house is still standing and I got a four day weekend out of it.

This break gave me time to put together a unit I have been itching to create for my cute lil’ second graders: a unit all about consonant digraphs (SH, WH, PH, CH, & TH). I wanted something concrete and 
meaningful so these sounds would stick with them FOR GOOD.  
   
This digraph unit is 91 pages and full of fun (I believe that fun in the classroom means you are tricking your students into learning… and I love being tricky)! In this unit you will find posters for each consonant digraph (SH, WH, PH, CH, & TH) and flash cards for each digraph. You will also find a word sort, word hunt, 7 digraph games (2 with data worksheets), and 8 different practice worksheets. *All of the posters, flashcards, and games that are available in color also come in black & white... 'cuz I know what it is like to NOT have a color printer!*
  

Since I don't have a color printer at my house, I just printed these off at my mom and dad's (thanks guys)!!
It's wayyyyy cheaper than anywhere else and I am their best customer! ;)

I am so happy to have my digraph posters all ready to go--laminated and everything. Between Christmas activities and all the fun digraph games available in this unit, we are going to have a exciting week!

do you know when to add "-s" or "-es"?


Along with learning about "y" endings replaced with "-ies", we are also learning about adding "-es" to words.
To help my students remember the rules associated with this phonics skill, I made this anchor chart:

I had one little girl say to me this week:
Mrs. Lindsey, this is my favorite-est characters you have made!

 I designed this unit to teach my students about "y" ending plural words.
For Example: baby --> babies

After creating these letter characters, I told my students that poor old "Y" is allergic to "S" because of her perfume and flowers. "Y" is sad he is allergic to her, because he thinks she is so nice and pretty. Nevertheless, whenever "S" comes around, "Y" has to get lost because of his allergies. Thank goodness "I" and "E" are willing to take his place... In fact, they are more than happy to! They love "S" and they always get dressed up for her and bring her flowers!

when do you double the final consonant?


We have been learning a lot about word endings lately (-ed and -ing).

One day, last week, one of my students asked...

"Mrs. Lindsey, why do some words double the letter?"

For example:
run --> running
swim --> swimming
skip --> skipped

To teach my students the rule for doubling the final consonant, I made this flow chart:

Have I mentioned before how much I am L.O.V.I.N.G. my Spring Break?

Relaxing and hanging out in my PJs all day has inspired me to create these little superheroes:
These guys will help teach my students about adding "-er" and "-est" to the end of words.

The actual superheroes are "-er" because they are supER.
The first grade superheroes are "-est" because they are the bEST superheroes in the whole world!
(Even better than real, powerful superheroes!)

I am working on a whole entire unit of fun to go along with these character posters!
It isn't finished yet, but the unit will include (and isn't limited to):

clowning around (teaching ou & ow)


Last week we learned about the letter pairs "ou" and ow" (example: found, clown). 
My students had a lot of fun with these clown activities and they loved the silly clown posters!

I am one lucky girl. I work at a really great school with a fantastic faculty. This clown pictured below is a 6th grade teacher (my favorite teacher friend), who helped me out with an "ow" and "ou" phonics lesson. She came into our classroom dressed as a clown with owies (band-aids) all over her! The students were in awe and she had their attention the whole time! They love visitors... especially funny ones! She talked about "ow" and "ou" words and read them a Clifford Circus story. Before she left, she gave them popcorn from the circus (the principal popped it for us) and they were in H.E.A.V.E.N.



These are the cute clown posters that are include in my TpT unit.
I love how they have owies all over them!


We also played "Pin the OWIE on the Clown!" They thought this game was hilarious!
They used real band-aids... we went through a lot of band-aids (how can you not when you are teaching the "ow" sound?)... which isn't really out of the ordinary in first grade...

Anyways, this game is also included in my TpT unit.

Like I said, we went through lots of band-aids...

Inflectional Word Endings (-ed, -ing)


Last week we learned about word endings (-s, -ed, -ing).
My students had a lot of fun with these activities and they loved the "ing" and "ed" posters.

This whole unit was inspired by these little characters I designed:


Notice how the "ed" are old people because--it happened in the past
and the "ing" are first graders because--it is happening now!!

phonics: double OO

Last week we learned about the double /oo/ sound... (example: good, book, cook).
This is such a hard one to remember, because it isn't an actual vowel sound.

Instead, it sounds like a muscle man flexing his huge muscles.

That's why I called in the big guns.


My big/younger brother, Mr. Cody, came to teach my students about the double /oo/ sound.
Let's just say that my students were in awe at his huge muscles.

Everytime he flexed his arms, he would make the double /oo/ sound (as in book) and he would have the students do it with him. They thought it was great!

He also told them a story about a girl named Brooke whom he was trying to impress at school (which made them giggle). He said that she was only impressed with the double /oo/ sound. He had the kids come up with a list of words that had the correct double /oo/ sound. They wanted to help Mr. Cody impress Brooke!


I made a poster of Mr. Cody flexing his muscles,
so my students can always remember the double /oo/ sound.


After, Mr. Cody taught them how to flex their muscles with the double /oo/ sound, he wanted to arm wrestle. However, he wouldn't let my first graders use their strength. He made them use their brains! They could only move his arm down with double /oo/ words. Everytime they would say a double /oo/ word (and they knew a lot), they could move Mr. Cody's arm towards the table.

The first graders all beat Mr. Cody!
That just proves that brains are better than muscles!


We also made some Double-OO Looking Glasses:


My students loved them and they thought they were so funny!
This was also a great way to assess their learning.

compound words


You know you're a nerd when you get excited about words.

I am a nerd.

I was excited to teach compound words.

Rain/bow.

Cup/cake.

Butter/fly.

What isn't to love?

To teach my students about these lovely word pairs, we made a HUGE list of all the compound words we could think of. Then, with the words on the board, we made Compound Cards:



 I love this activity, because my students really have to think about the meaning of the compound word, as well as, the two words that it is composed of.

This fun activity is also easy to prepare (which is great, because there aren't enough hours in the day)!
All you have to do is cut construction paper in half, horizontally.  Easy!

The next day, we started another huge list and it is still growing! I love how they are always thinking up new compound words (and some non-compound words--that they wish were compound words, so they could write it on the list).

The list is actually taped down to a table, instead of on the wall. I am very particular about what can go up on my classroom walls, and it is easier for them to write words down on a table.
