number sense worksheet

Last week I created a number sense worksheet to review all the different ways a number can be written. I got this idea from a math training I received by Lori at Lori's Page.

All you need to do is give your students a number and the number word (unless they are geniuses and they already know how to spell double digit numbers). I write it on the board in the same place every day and I call it the "Magic Number of the Day!"

Instead of having your students fill in this worksheet by themselves, have the whole class do #1 together, then have them pass their paper clockwise and have everyone do #2 together. Do this until the whole worksheet is filled it. This just makes it more fun, because they think it is a group activity.

When your students have grasped the concept of number sense, you can also race to see which table/group can complete their worksheets the fastest.

You can download this worksheet for free at TpT by clicking on the pictures below:

mr. fly unit is posted!

This Unit Includes:

*Y Character Poster in Color
*Y Character Poster in Black and White
*3 FUN games
*Assessments
*Graphing Activity
*Mr. Fly Guy Writing Activities
*1 Art Activity

My students have ab-so-lute-ly LOVED this unit.
And... can I just say that Fly Guy Meets Fly Girl is my favorite of all the Fly Guy books... so cute!

This unit includes some really fun fly swatter games!
(FYI: I bought my fly swatters at Walmart for $0.98 each.)

After the fun fly swatter games, my students made their own fly swatters--they turned out darling!
(Well... as darling as fly swatters can be!)

phonics: double OO

Last week we learned about the double /oo/ sound... (example: good, book, cook).
This is such a hard one to remember, because it isn't an actual vowel sound.

Instead, it sounds like a muscle man flexing his huge muscles.

That's why I called in the big guns.

My big/younger brother, Mr. Cody, came to teach my students about the double /oo/ sound.
Let's just say that my students were in awe at his huge muscles.

Everytime he flexed his arms, he would make the double /oo/ sound (as in book) and he would have the students do it with him. They thought it was great!

He also told them a story about a girl named Brooke whom he was trying to impress at school (which made them giggle). He said that she was only impressed with the double /oo/ sound. He had the kids come up with a list of words that had the correct double /oo/ sound. They wanted to help Mr. Cody impress Brooke!

I made a poster of Mr. Cody flexing his muscles,
so my students can always remember the double /oo/ sound.

After, Mr. Cody taught them how to flex their muscles with the double /oo/ sound, he wanted to arm wrestle. However, he wouldn't let my first graders use their strength. He made them use their brains! They could only move his arm down with double /oo/ words. Everytime they would say a double /oo/ word (and they knew a lot), they could move Mr. Cody's arm towards the table.

The first graders all beat Mr. Cody!
That just proves that brains are better than muscles!

We also made some Double-OO Looking Glasses:

My students loved them and they thought they were so funny!
This was also a great way to assess their learning.
